Chapter Seventeen

I threw myself to the floor as another arrow whistled by and bounced off the bars of the cage. The skin along my cheekbone tingled in its wake and adrenaline stabbed through my veins.

Someone was trying to kill me.

Instincts kicked in. I didn’t have my bow, but I pulled my dagger and rolled into a crouch, staring in the direction the arrows had come. Brynwyn snorted, a blast of hot air that blew my hair back. A flash of black, and another arrow came for me. I rolled to the side and dove for the cage across from Brynwyn’s. Scrambling around the side of the cage to put it in between me and the archer, I tried to control my breathing and keep my limbs from shaking. Unfortunately, whoever wanted me dead was between me and the door back into the hotel. If I could make it out the back door and into the streets, at least darkness would cover me.

From the other side of the dome, another arrow zinged in my direction. Two assailants. There were at least two people after me, one on each side. I was trapped in between them, and they now covered both exits. And with nothing but my dagger, I couldn’t defend myself until they got close enough for hand-to-hand combat. If they even needed to get that close, which was doubtful since they had bows. I couldn’t hide forever. God, I really didn’t want to die here, in this stark, alien place.

To my left was one of the large cages that held the lizard ostrich creatures. I dove across to it, arrows whistling toward me. A sharp blossom of pain jolted through my leg, but I didn’t take the time to look. I scrambled to the door of the cage, opened it, and then shut it again. Silently, I slid behind a crate to the right of the door on the outside. I pulled myself in a tight ball in the shadow of the crate and waited for my hunters to come looking for me, thinking I’d gone inside.

I took a moment to look at the arrow protruding from my calf. My vision spun for a moment as I looked at my bloody limb, the flesh jagged and bulging grotesquely from where the arrow exited the back of my leg. Somewhere at the edges of my brain I could feel intense pain, but at the moment my adrenaline rush numbed it. But I realized I’d left a trail of smeared and dripping blood when I crawled behind the crate, which meant my hiding place was ruined. I didn’t have a whole lot of other options at the moment, though. Taking a deep breath to fill my lungs, I held it and listened.

Footsteps. Coming up on my right. Quick and light, practiced. I waited, timing it until the footsteps were coming around the edge of the cage. Where they’d see the line of blood leading them right to where I was hidden. I sprung from my hiding spot, my leg nearly giving out beneath me.
